While mouthwash can be a helpful addition to oral hygiene routines, it is not considered a necessity or a replacement for brushing and flossing. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Mechanical Removal of Plaque: Brushing and flossing physically remove plaque and food particles from the teeth and gums. The bristles of a toothbrush and the action of flossing help dislodge and remove plaque, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Mouthwash alone cannot provide this mechanical cleaning action.
  2. Limited Contact Time: Mouthwash is typically swished around the mouth for a short period, usually 30 seconds to a minute. This limited contact time is not sufficient to effectively remove plaque and debris from all surfaces of the teeth and gums. On the other hand, brushing and flossing involve more thorough and prolonged contact with the teeth and gums.
  3. Lack of Fluoride: Many mouthwashes do not contain fluoride, which is an important ingredient for preventing tooth decay. Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel of the teeth and can aid in preventing cavities. Regular brushing with a fluoride toothpaste is necessary to ensure the teeth receive adequate exposure to fluoride.
  4. Ineffective Against Plaque Between Teeth: While mouthwash can reach some areas of the mouth, it is not effective at removing plaque and food particles from between the teeth, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Flossing (and/or cleaning between your teeth with interdental brushes and/or water flossers) is crucial for cleaning these interdental spaces and preventing gum disease.
  5. Addressing Underlying Issues: Brushing and flossing also provide an opportunity to inspect the mouth for any signs of oral health problems, such as bleeding gums, tooth decay, or oral lesions. Regular dental check-ups, along with brushing and flossing, are essential for maintaining good oral health and addressing any potential issues.

It's important to note that mouthwash can still be a beneficial addition to oral care routines. It can freshen breath, temporarily reduce bacteria in the mouth, and provide a feeling of cleanliness. However, it should only be used in conjunction with regular brushing and flossing for optimal oral hygiene.
